What to Document Before Calling a Basement Contractor
A homeowner checklist that helps a professional understand the problem faster.
Photograph visible signs
When safe, take wide photographs showing the room and close photographs showing the crack, stain, puddle, damaged material, or equipment. Include an object for scale, but do not enter water near electrical equipment.
Write down timing and weather
Record the date, recent rainfall or snowmelt, when water first appeared, how long it lasted, and whether the same location leaked before. Note whether gutters overflowed or a sump pump ran continuously.
Identify property details
A contractor may ask about foundation material, basement finish, crawl spaces, previous repairs, drainage, sump pumps, additions, and exterior access. Gather invoices or warranties for earlier work when available.
Prepare questions
Ask what is causing the problem, what evidence supports that conclusion, whether alternatives exist, who performs the work, which permits apply, what is included in writing, and how the warranty works.
