Signs a Sump Pump May Need Replacement

Listen and observe
Grinding, rattling, excessive vibration, failure to start, constant running, or short cycles can indicate a pump, float, pit, check valve, discharge, or water-load problem. Unusual behavior should be evaluated before a major storm.
Check the whole system
The pump is only one component. The basin, cover, electrical supply, alarm, check valve, discharge pipe, exterior outlet, and backup all affect performance. A strong pump cannot compensate for a blocked discharge line.
Power outages change the risk
Many water events happen during storms that also interrupt power. A professionally selected battery backup, secondary pump, generator connection, or alarm may reduce risk depending on the home and expected volume.
Test safely
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not handle electrical connections in damp or flooded conditions. A contractor can review capacity, age, installation quality, and discharge.
